Alex Miles installation at Cradle Mountain

4 Dec 2019

Construction works are racing ahead on site at the Cradle Mountain Gateway Precinct with the move in date for stage one of the project now set for December 20.

This week, the tessellated plywood roof linings have been joined by new work by Tasmanian artist/designer Alex Miles.

The new installation was the winning response to the 2018 Public Art commission coordinated by Arts Tasmania and depicts Australia’s only cold climate winter-deciduous tree, the Fagus (Nothofagus gunnii).

In Alex’s words, the suspended canopy of brass fagus branches “acts as an immersive primer for visitors about to head out into the park, capturing the spirit of the Mountain and Cradle Valley and provides a gentle reminder to tread lightly”.
