Ponderosa
Six distinct designs, six distinct experiences.
Nestled in the ebbing hills of South Australia’s picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula, Ponderosa is a collection of five luxury tourism pods and an adapted stone-walled cottage designed to offer guests a distinctly immersive natural experience.
Embracing the property’s contrasting characteristics — its natural attributes, geology, and aspects over the nearby Southern Ocean — we approached each pod as five individual designs reflecting five individual settings. Each space features finely crafted open interiors and outdoor areas that give a sense of continuation of the surrounding landscape while still offering a sense of warmth and enclosure.
An ambitious first, locally made
As our first major tourism project led by our Adelaide office, we are proud of the designs that are both unique in their form and experience. Adding to the integration of rainwater harvesting and solar collection, the prefabricated pods will also be made locally in Adelaide — highlighting the designs as a resourceful example of sustainability and local craftsmanship.
Considered contrasts
Ponderosa’s unique designs came from a shared desire with our clients to create luxury accommodation that broke the mould of the quintessential country getaway.
The five forms range from the angular Eucalyptus tunnel pod, which takes inspiration from the Hindmarsh Valley’s local vegetation, In the round, featuring exposed concrete culverts that lead to a calm external bath, and the larger Split level, a two-storey pod that can accommodate up to four guests. The designs are subtly linked by the surface charred timbers on the pods’ predominant exterior cladding.
The established five-bedroom Cottage has been adapted to mimic the gabled roof forms of the original structure in a contemporary manner, offering an outdoor area perfect for gatherings all year round. A distinct lap pool sits parallel to the cottage and provides an infinity edge view towards Encounter Bay’s rugged Bluff headland.
