Bento’s newest Japanese restaurant is located in the busy Channel Court Shopping Centre in the thriving region of Kingston. The region is one of the fastest growing in Tasmania, and as such, a new Bento store was envisaged as being a great addition to the local food offerings.

Our clients were keen to build on the strong brand identity established in the Harrington St and Moonah Bento stores, while also wanting the interior to be distinctive in its own right. This gave us the opportunity to explore a slightly different interior treatment, ensuring the key elements of texture, colour and horizontal stripes were still prominent in order to create a sense of energy, along with a brand that can be easily recognised throughout all locations.

The design approach for the Kingston location was to play with the shapes of the existing Futago-designed logo. Rectangular peg-board panels line the walls, with the introduction of white triangles, which add a contrast to the red and black to create a strong graphic content. Circular dowels fixed to the peg-board act as supports for the TV menu display and pendant lighting, while horizontal stripes are incorporated into the counter, which then wraps round to create the back of the booth seats. All these elements combine to transform this site into another lively space for the local community to socialise and eat.
