The proposed relocation of the CSIRO laboratories from Castray Point in Salamanca to a new International Antarctic Precinct at Macquarie Point presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to reimagine this historic Hobart site.
At the core of this Tasmanian tourism industry proposal is a plan to activate Castray Point 365 days a year – through innovative and engaging public spaces, a year-round fresh produce and fish market, small scale commercial activity, and a true water-edge park for locals and visitors to gather and embrace our harbour city.
Through a series of design interventions – ranging from small scale adaptive re-use of the existing buildings through to a longer-term vision for a new landmark Maritime Museum – the waterfront is proposed to be reclaimed as part of Hobart’s public space.
With sculptural forms and portal frames inspired by boat building, the new vision allows for Tasmania’s maritime history to be celebrated; from our indigenous past, colonial history through to the present day and the Sydney to Hobart race.
