FAQs
About the Studio
Who is Cumulus?
We are a B Corp certified architecture and interior design studio with offices in Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne and Adelaide. The studio was established in 2011 and is led by directors Todd Henderson, Kylee Scott and Peter Walker, alongside a national team of over 40 architects, interior designers, graduates and support staff. We work across residential, commercial, tourism, hospitality, education, community, heritage and adaptive reuse projects.
Where are your offices?
We have four studios: Hobart (Level 6, 65 Murray Street), Launceston (Ground Floor, Suite 2, 33 George Street), Melbourne (Level 3, 370 Little Bourke Street) and Adelaide (Ground Floor, Suite 1, 47 Waymouth Street). All four offices work as a single team, so the location of your project does not need to match the location of the office. We regularly deliver projects interstate and in regional areas.
Do you work outside Tasmania?
Yes. While we began in Tasmania, we now work across Australia. Our Melbourne and Adelaide studios allow us to serve clients in Victoria, South Australia and beyond, and our experience with remote and regional projects means distance is rarely a barrier. We have delivered projects from Antarctic research stations to visitor centres in World Heritage wilderness areas, and from inner-city apartment developments to rural cellar doors in regional New South Wales.
What certifications and commitments does Cumulus hold?
We are a Certified B Corporation, part of a global community of businesses meeting independently verified standards of social and environmental performance. We also hold third-party certification in ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 9001 (Quality Management). These sit alongside our Sustainability Action Plan and Reconciliation Action Plan, which guide how we work as a studio. You can read more about our approach on our sustainability page.
About the Work
What types of projects do you work on?
Our experience spans private homes, tourism and hospitality venues, social and affordable housing, education facilities, community buildings, commercial offices, heritage restorations, adaptive reuse projects and master plans. Recent and current projects include cellar doors, visitor centres, cancer wellness facilities, apartment developments, specialist schools, civic master plans, cathedral restorations and hotel precincts. We are comfortable working across a wide range of scales and sectors.
Do you do interior design as well as architecture?
Yes. Our interior design team works as an integrated part of the wider studio. On architectural projects, the interiors team is involved from concept design, shaping spatial planning, material selection, joinery and the curation of fixtures and fittings alongside the architectural design. We also take on standalone interior design commissions, including restaurant fitouts, office interiors, residential refurbishments and furniture selection projects.
Do you work on heritage buildings?
Heritage and adaptive reuse is one of our core strengths. We have restored and adapted buildings ranging from 1840s sandstone institutions and 1860s brick terraces to mid-century halls and derelict alpine lodges. Our approach is to understand what matters most about the existing building and make sure none of that is lost, while giving the building a viable purpose for its next life. We work closely with heritage consultants and are experienced in navigating heritage approvals at local, state and national levels.
How do you approach sustainability?
Sustainability is embedded in our design process from the start, not added as an afterthought. We work with each client to find the right environmental response for their project, informed by what is achievable within the budget, the site and the technology available. We are not interested in overpromising. We are interested in making considered choices about materials, energy, longevity and impact, and in getting better at it with every project. On projects where higher environmental performance is a priority, we work with specialist sustainability consultants to target specific ratings such as NatHERS, Green Star or Living Building Challenge.
About the Process
How do I start a project with you?
The best place to start is a phone call or email to one of our studios. We are happy to have an initial conversation about your project at no obligation. From there, we can advise on the best way forward, whether that is a feasibility study, a project exploration stage, or moving directly into design.
What is a feasibility study or project exploration?
Not every project arrives fully formed. A feasibility study or project exploration is a low-commitment way to test an idea with experienced, honest advice. We look at the site, the brief, the planning constraints and the budget, and give you a clear picture of what is possible and what is not. If the project stacks up, we have laid the groundwork for everything that follows. If it does not, you have found that out early, before committing significant time or money. These early stages are some of the most valuable work we do.
What does a typical project process look like?
Every project is different, but our process generally follows a clear sequence: initial briefing, site analysis and concept design, developed design, documentation for construction, contract administration during the build, and post-occupancy review. At each stage there are defined deliverables and a client sign-off before we progress. This structure gives both us and our clients confidence that the project is on track in terms of design quality, budget and program.
Do you manage the construction process?
We provide contract administration services during construction, which means we review the builder's work against the design documentation, assess progress claims, and help resolve issues as they arise on site. We work closely with builders throughout the construction phase to make sure the quality of the design is carried through to the finished building. For clients seeking a more comprehensive delivery service, we are expanding our project management offering in 2026 and welcome enquiries about this.
Do you work with builders, engineers and other consultants?
Yes. We regularly coordinate large multidisciplinary consultant teams, including structural and services engineers, sustainability consultants, cost planners, landscape architects, heritage consultants and specialist advisors. We have established relationships with consultants across Australia and can assemble the right team for any brief. We also work collaboratively with builders, and on many of our projects the builder relationship begins well before construction starts.
Fees & Engagement
How do you charge for your services?
Our fees vary depending on the type, scale and complexity of the project. We offer several fee structures, including percentage-based fees, lump sum agreements and hourly rates, and we work with each client to find the arrangement that best suits their project. We are always transparent about costs and will provide a clear fee proposal before any engagement begins. The best way to get an indication of fees for your project is to get in touch for an initial conversation.
Is there a minimum project size?
We do not publish a minimum project value, but we are best suited to projects where the brief has enough depth and ambition to benefit from the level of thinking and resource we bring. That ranges from considered residential renovations through to large-scale public buildings and multi-year master plans. If you are unsure whether your project is the right fit, we are happy to have a conversation and point you in the right direction.
