A narrow dining space at Bento Moonah is lined entirely with textured OSB wall panels and vertical timber battens, with a continuous red-lit ceiling element drawing the eye through the length of the room. Simple timber tables and bench seating sit beneath warm, ambient lighting, creating an intimate, linear dining experience.

Bento Hobart + Moonah

Hobart, Tasmania 2015

Two fitouts, one unmistakable identity.

Bento Box came to us with two restaurants to fit out at once - one in Hobart, one in Moonah. Designing them in parallel gave us a rare opportunity: to build a clear, cohesive brand identity through the architecture itself, not just the signage. Both sites had tight floor areas that needed to work hard, accommodating dine-in customers and grab-and-go trade in the same compact space. The challenge was to make each restaurant feel lively and generous without relying on square metres it did not have.

The fitout is built around two simple moves. Horizontal strips of bold colour run through both restaurants, creating a sense of energy and movement that draws the eye along the space rather than into its corners. These sit against panels of OSB - oriented strand board - whose rough, textured surface provides a warm, unpretentious counterpoint to the graphic colour work. Together they create an aesthetic that is instantly recognisable from the street and carries through every surface inside. It is a fitout that does the work of branding without needing to say the name twice - you know you are in a Bento Box before you have read the menu.

A customer stands at the counter, where illuminated menu boards, stainless steel surfaces, and neatly arranged condiments define the compact, efficient ordering space. Tables at Bento Hobart
