Darkwood Residence

Tamar Valley, Tasmania 2020

Wilderness at heart. Wilderness at home.

Step straight off the verandah and stroll amongst towering trees. Or take a window seat, and feel suspended in the Tamar Valley views. Darkwood is simple for the most part, but clever when it matters. It’s not detached from its surroundings, but part of it. The house steps down the steep hill to closely match the ground line, allowing it to stay connected to nature. And what remarkable nature it is, with views over the river, through the trees, and to the beaches and bays beyond.

Clever, not posh.

Our clients wanted a home with a small, sustainable footprint and smart use of space. From a raw plate steel kitchen bench and splashbacks to durable flooring, nothing is too fussy.

A tin metal skin proved to be robust, low maintenance and cost-effective. Then, we timber clad the outer areas you’d come in contact with so that they felt more tactile, almost like joinery or furniture. Macrocarpa, a plantation timber, kept this sustainable as did solar panels, good insulation and a wetback heating system.

A minimalist living room features a striking board-marked concrete fireplace and a low-profile leather sofa, set against a contrast of black and white surfaces and light timber flooring.

Back to nature.

Our response was relatively low-tech, stripped back and simple. We prioritised the natural surrounds, natural light and hard-wearing natural materials to fit the brief. A folded, sculptural roof lets light flood the living area, and built-in furniture fits the small footprint, with deep windows allowing you to sit, relax and feel part of the view.

A modern, low-profile residence featuring timber and concrete finishes is perched on a grassy hillside, partially hidden by a dense screen of tall eucalypt trees under a clear blue sky.
A sophisticated living area features a board-marked concrete fireplace that doubles as a sculptural room divider. The industrial textures are balanced by a tufted leather sofa and a brass coffee table, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a lush, forested landscape. A person walks down a set of pale timber stairs that lead upward toward a bright, distant window, framed by a minimalist interior of dark ceilings and concrete walls.
A modern, multi-tiered home clad in corrugated metal and vertical timber sits on a sloped site, featuring a series of rooflines that follow the natural grade. The structures overlook a wide river surrounded by rolling hills and dense coastal forest.
A moody, open-plan dining area features a dark ceiling and organic, pendant lights over a large timber table. The space is anchored by a central concrete fireplace, with vast glass doors overlooking a scenic river and forested coastline. A woman and child sit on a green cushioned window seat in a moody, black-walled bedroom that frames a view of a rocky, sunlit hillside.
