Gorge House

Launceston, Tasmania 2023

A modest extension to a 1910 weatherboard house.

The residents of this Launceston home wanted to feel more connected to their garden with its beautiful established oak and weeping willow trees. Seeking to create a new space that catered to both the hustle and bustle of family life, as well as entertaining friends, the renovation and extension removed a poorly built rear kitchen lean-to and external laundry, to insert a new kitchen, dining space, bedroom and bathroom into the rear garden.

Seated at garden level.

The stepped plan reflects and embraces the site's slope to create what feels like a sunken dining seat where, when seated, you are at eye level with the garden. The simple external palette of timber weatherboard and brick grounds the building in the garden, while botanic green and dusty pink interiors reflect the colourful and creative lives of the owners.

The white weatherboard extension features a sloped roof and sliding glass doors that open onto a wet wooden deck and paved patio area.
A white decorative archway frames a long wooden hallway leading to a raised kitchen area where a person sits at a large table. A brown dog sits on a concrete step beneath a modern white breezeway, to the right a tall, leafy green hedge and behind a large, drooping willow tree.
A modern green kitchen features a large timber island with a white counter where a brown dog stands near children on a polished concrete wall, all illuminated by a bright skylight. A brick path leads through a grassy yard toward a modern white weatherboard home with large windows and a small tree in the foreground.
A victorian white weatherboard cottage with twin chimneys sits nestled among dense green trees and neighbouring rooftops.
