George Street Offices

Launceston, Tasmania 2019

A calm, collaborative and connected work environment.

Our client approached us to design a modern and healthy office centred on collaborative workspaces that would encourage teams to connect, while still providing quiet areas for individual work. Our contemporary design focuses on the use of Tasmanian oak, a sustainable local material that warmly reflects the space’s natural light, improves acoustics, and can be easily reused and repurposed to suit the building’s future needs.

Timber-clad curves meet mellow acoustics.

To improve the ‘health’ of the building, we redesigned the rigid, compartmentalised space to create both private workspace areas and more open neighbourhood-like clusters - dedicated hubs that promote staff engagement and communication alongside improved access to natural light and fresh air.

We replaced the 1990s dated colour palette, glass balustrades and blue painted plasterboard with Tasmanian oak battens rhythmically placed along the walls, ceilings and fixed joinery. An engineered baffle system was then laid between each batten, extending the inherent acoustic properties of this versatile hardwood.

A curved glass wall with vertical timber frames follows a dark carpeted hallway toward a set of wooden double doors. Above, the ceiling features thin wooden slats with integrated linear lighting.

Natural materials, local craftsmanship.

Natural materials where chosen wherever possible. We emphasised the work of local builders and craftspeople throughout the design, such as the intricate boardroom table made by Launceston furniture maker Simon Ancher. Warm, timber-clad entry spaces replaced the stark original entry to welcome visitors, while the new wall’s geometry follows the lines of the foyer, creating a consistent, curving timber skin.

With a focus on sustainability and flexibility, all timber fittings have been installed to allow for the future reconfiguration or reuse of materials.

Grey sofas on a speckled carpet face a large window overlooking a historic red-brick building. Indoor plants sit atop low cabinets beneath modern linear lighting.
High-backed black chairs surround a wooden table in a boardroom featuring slatted timber walls and a matching ceiling with linear lights. A large window overlooks the same red-brick building seen from the lounge.
Black chairs surround a wooden table in a room featuring floor-to-ceiling timber cabinetry and a large white structural pillar. Cylindrical pendant lights hang from a dark, textured ceiling. A row of indoor plants sits atop black slatted cabinets behind a grey sofa in a modern office. Above, geometric acoustic ceiling baffles are arranged in a tiered pattern.
Rows of grey workstations are separated by black cabinets with integrated planters in a modern, open-plan office. Above, geometric acoustic baffles and linear pendant lights create a tiered pattern across the ceiling. An alternate view of the office highlights a corridor with grey carpet that leads past glass-walled offices and workstations under a ceiling of linear lights and grey acoustic baffles.
A cushioned bench is built into a timber-panelled alcove with grey fabric wall tiles and blue pillows. Overhead, the wooden panels meet a slatted timber ceiling. A hallway with diagonally slatted timber walls and matching recessed lighting leads past a printer station toward an open office. Black planter cabinets separate the corridor from the main workspace.
Three cream chairs sit around a circular table in a meeting room enclosed by glass with a frosted privacy strip. The space features vertical timber walls and a matching slatted ceiling with integrated lighting.
