Bear With Me Cafe

South Hobart, Tasmania 2018

Untapping potential at a Hobart institution.

Formerly the site of a long-standing South Hobart bakery, Bear with Me retains references to the building’s past, while revealing the unrealised potential of its location.

The addition of space and light were fundamental to the project, led by the broad expansion of the café floor. To the building’s rear, views of kunanyi/Mt Wellington are framed by expansive new windows, while playful wall lighting gives the café added warmth and personality.

Unrealised potential.

Perhaps the strongest indicator of the site’s baking history, an old industrial rangehood now exists as a unique sculptural element above the dining area. Original French panelling under the exterior windows has also been retained, informing the contemporary, contrast panelling used within the café interior.

With a refined material palette reflecting the blue and grey hues of the surrounding natural environment, this south Asian-inspired café is a fitting addition to the popular mountain-side suburb.

Two people occupy an intimate window alcove featuring a light grey couch that wraps around a timber table, lit by a playful lamp overhead and set against a wood-trimmed wall dividing dark grey and white finishes..
A group of people gather around a large white tiled table in a deep grey monochrome dining room divided by a decorative wire wall and illuminated by soft pendant lights. A speckled stone basin with a brass faucet sits on a timber vanity, set against a large mirror to highlight the interplay of natural textures and metallic accents.
Wooden "BEAR" lettering with white cursive "with me" script is applied to a window, reflecting the streetscape behind, while framing a view into the interior space. A minimalist seating space features a floating timber table and black wire stools set against a white wall, framed by timber battening and centered under a glowing circular wall light.
