Christopher O’Brien
Project Manager | Senior Architect
Registered Architect TAS #891
Hobart Studio
Chris is a senior architect and project manager with over 26 years of experience across education, community, performing arts, heritage and workplace projects in Tasmania, Melbourne and Sydney. Before joining Cumulus, he held senior roles at GHD Design, LIMINAL Studio and Morrison and Breytenbach Architects, leading projects from early feasibility through to construction and handover. His project experience includes The Hedberg performing arts precinct in Hobart, the award-winning Moonah Arts Centre, child and family centres in some of Tasmania's most disadvantaged communities, and Tasmania's first prefabricated CLT multi-storey residential building at the University of Tasmania's Inveresk campus.
What sets Chris apart is the way he manages the space between design ambition and project delivery. He is as comfortable navigating heritage constraints, staging complexities and value management processes as he is shaping the design itself. Clients and builders consistently describe him as calm, measured, and genuinely collaborative - someone who builds strong partnerships across the project team and keeps things moving when challenges arise. His experience in contract administration is particularly deep, and he brings a pragmatic, problem-solving approach that has seen complex projects delivered on time and on budget.
At Cumulus, Chris strengthens our capacity to deliver large and technically demanding projects with the same care and rigour we bring to everything we do. His background in education architecture and his involvement with Learning Environments Australasia, where he serves as Vice-Chair of the Tasmanian Chapter, make him a natural fit for a studio with a growing portfolio of school, community and public projects.
