A cluster of low, distinct architectural volumes sits within a misty, sloping landscape, combining a translucent glass and stainless steel yoga pavilion with darker, vertically clad charred timber forms. The composition reads as a series of separate buildings connected by paths, with soft light glowing through the main studio volume, framed by native vegetation and rocky, mossy landscape.

Derby Yoga & Wellness Centre

Derby, Tasmania In Progress

Rest and recovery for a town built on riding.

Derby's transformation from former tin-mining town to world-class mountain biking destination has been one of Tasmania's most remarkable stories. The main street is now lined with bike shops, cafes and accommodation, and the network of single-track trails through the surrounding forest draws riders from across Australia and beyond. The new wellness facility will provide somewhere to recover, slow down and balance the intensity of the riding with something quieter and more restorative.

Our client, who also developed the Floating Sauna on Lake Derby, came to us with a brief for a yoga and wellness centre on a site overlooking the lake. The program brings together a yoga studio for up to 22 people, an outdoor yoga platform, a magnesium plunge pool with views over the lake and floating sauna, a communal thermal pool, steam room, sauna, fire pit and the shared facilities to support them. Future stages will add treatment rooms and a manager's residence. It is a substantial program for a small town, and it has been designed to be grounded rather than out of place.

Rest and recovery for a town built on riding.

The building is organised around two distinct material palettes. The yoga spaces are lighter and brighter - concrete with timber parquet flooring, natural light, and a connection to the outdoor platform for morning and evening practice when the weather allows. The wellness spaces are darker and more industrial in character - robust, seamless surfaces that can be hosed clean, with marble to the basin zone and cedar-lined sauna. The shift between the two is deliberate, marking the transition from active practice to passive recovery.

A light-filled yoga studio with pale timber herringbone flooring and a simple coffered ceiling grid is framed by full-height glazing and sheer curtains. Yoga mats and blocks are arranged across the space, soft daylight complimented with warm interior spotlights and views extending to the surrounding landscape, looking down on the valley. Large windows also bring light in through the side of the space behind a window seat of pale timber joinery, the stainless steel facade reflecting light through the forms pocket windows.

Designed for mud, sweat and stillness.

Throughout, the design responds to the practical realities of a facility in a mountain biking town. A boot room at the entry manages the transition from trail to studio. Bike parking is contained to one area to maintain a clean arrival. Shower and wash stations allow riders to clean up before entering the wellness spaces. The pools are designed for heat retention and operational efficiency - the thermal pool shallow enough to maintain temperature with minimal energy, the plunge pool deep enough for full immersion. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the sauna and steam room towers capture views over the lake and the forest beyond, connecting the experience of being inside to the landscape that brought people to Derby in the first place.

A compact sauna interior lined entirely with dark timber panelling has tiered bench seating, looking out of two large windows framing the landscape and sky respectively, contrasting the warm, enclosed space with the cooler landscape beyond.
An elongated rectilinear mineral pool lined in small beige square tiles cuts through the site, forming a central axis between buildings – views into neighbouring structures show the yoga studio and steam room in use, with an outdoor shower at the rear. The reflective surface of the pool mirrors the surrounding volumes, guiding movement through the wellness centre and connecting the dispersed structures.
An infinity-edge outdoor hot pool extends toward the surrounding landscape, its waterline merging with distant views. Tall, vertically clad timber volumes behind contain the sauna and steam room, while a solid wall to the right conceals reception, private bathrooms, and lockers leading through to the indoor hot pool. A dimly lit hot pool lined with dark, square mosaic tiles reflects light from large corner windows looking out into the valley, creating a calm, enclosed bathing environment.
A refined glass and light brushed steel yoga studio pavilion is raised above the ground on a concrete plinth, revealing silhouettes of members within. Adjacent, a dark timber yoga deck semi-enclosed with vertical battens bridges between openness and retreat.
